Facebook whiners: Get over it

January 26th, 2012

What lots of us don’t incessantly remember about Facebook is that this is a business, not a charitable endeavor that exists entirely to set us in affect with our far-flung high school friends.

We totally know that the Facebook brass works hard to tinker with the site completely the time sometimes, admittedly, to my consternation equally a mode to keep the site looking fresh and vital. This is no different than how a paper forever changes up its layout or online movement page, eve on a identical tardily news day.

There is certainly some goldmine for advertisers here, merely Facebook besides has to continue evolving only to survive. There’s perpetually the risk of making a New Coke misunderstanding or turning some cautionary tale of social media, simply you can’t remain precisely the same and rest relevant.

The society has been relatively responsive to privacy concerns (usually as a effect of user outcry). Just at the same time, nada is free. Facebook is loose because they’re making money in some other style besides charging you.

Nobody could be surprised any longer by these apparent intrusions in our privacy. As Google GOOG +0.09% has besides demonstrated, null is private any more. The succeeding is now.

Facebook security breach raises concerns

November 16th, 2011

According to Facebook, users were somehow tricked into copying and pasting malicious code into their browser bars. Hackers then gained access to their profiles and could situation whatever they wished, and any of the user’s Facebook friends could see the images.

Chester Wisniewski, a security researcher at Sophos, articulated like schemes in the past receive lured users in with promises of free or discounted products.

It was unclear Tuesday who was responsible. Groups of hackers get threatened to positioned out a virus to “take down Facebook” over their concerns with the manner it handles user privacy.

Daimon Geopfert, a security expert for RSM McGladrey, enounced that this was one of the largest Facebook attacks he has seen. The scale and fastness were “unprecedented,” he said.

Experts enunciated it was easy to imagine another onslaught on the Facebook platform that would exist more troubling: sending false messages to family and supporters to lure them to malicious sites, where they might exist tricked into revealing private information. They warned that hackers could usage the template of this attack to launch copycat efforts.

The presence of the photos upset many Facebook users, who took to Twitter to say they were weighing whether to deactivate their accounts.

Part of Facebook’s success has stemmed from its ability to cause developers to produce games and other applications that work seamlessly on the site’s platform. But bountiful such leeway to outside programmers means the site is also vulnerable to hackers, Wisniewski said.

Facebook could be doing more to block these kinds of attacks, he said, such equally checking the credentials of programmers who register with the site and big users the choice to double-check any actions ahead they accept effect. The society has created an try to build things seamless, he said, just convenience ofttimes comes at the expense of security.
